In Jessé Andarilho, Writing, Culture and Terrain, we’re presented to the engagingly sly writer and activist, who tells us about his childhood and teenage years in the projects of Antares, in Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro, his conflicted relationship to school, the universe of graffiti, the rhyming circles and reading as a tool for transformation. A born storyteller, he presents an original and layered reading of our society, thinking outside the box.

About the intervieweed
Jessé Andarilho was born in Lins, in 1981, and grew up in Antares, a low-income housing project created in the early 1970s in the Rio’s West Side. Before telling stories, Jessé worked in various occupations. He wrote his first book in an unconventional way, on his phone’s notes app during the train commute. With various published short stories and two novels, Fiel (2014) and Efetivo variável (2017) .

About the collection’s editor
Marcus Faustini was born in Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro. His thirst for culture motivated him, from a young age, to move around the city, resulting in his book Guia afetivo da periferia (2009), where he tells the stories of his youth in the Rio periphery. With a Bachelor’s degree in Theater from CAL, Faustini is also a filmmaker and creator of Agência de Redes para a Juventude, a methodology developing young leaders from Rio’s and England’s peripheries to create projects that impact their areas.
