In Taísa Machado, Afrofunk and The Science of Rebolado, we’re presented to a dancer, teacher and writer, Chefona Mermo [Boss Bitch]. She’s the shrewd mind behind Afrofunk, a dance workshop created to decolonize the female body using mainly Black diaspora dances. With a sharp humor and contagious irreverence, a never-ending well of stories, she talks about the revolutionary dance method she developped and much more.

About the intervieweed
Taísa Machado was born in Rio in 1989. She began her artistic trajectory in Amir Haddad’s theatre collective. As a teen, she began going to funk parties and later on created Afrofunk, a deep dive in contemporary dances from peripheries around the world. Her classes attract women from all over Brazil, becoming real happenings.

About the collection’s editor
Marcus Faustini was born in Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro. His thirst for culture motivated him, from a young age, to move around the city, resulting in his book Guia afetivo da periferia (2009), where he tells the stories of his youth in the Rio periphery. With a Bachelor’s degree in Theater from CAL, Faustini is also a filmmaker and creator of Agência de Redes para a Juventude, a methodology developing young leaders from Rio’s and England’s peripheries to create projects that impact their areas.
