Sonia Gomes

Sonia Gomes brings together around a hundred images of the artist’s works, as well as essays by curators Ricardo Sardenberg and Solange Farkas. It also includes a textual work by artist Paulo Nazareth, made especially for Sonia’s book. The publication reveals the path of this artist who, transforming found and donated fabric materials through twisting and tying, builds – and sews – sculptures full of identity and memory. Born in Caetanópolis, Minas Gerais, a town with an important textile industry, Sonia grew up in the midst of textile factories and the strong presence of her grandmother – a Afro-brazilian woman, a healer, and a midwife, who taught her everything about the basics of sewing. Sewing, for the artist Sonia Gomes, is an act that relates to the tradition in which she is inserted – the artisan who discovers herself an artist and expands the reach of her creations.

About the artist
Sonia Gomes was born in Caetanópolis, Minas Gerais, in 1948, and now lives and works in Belo Horizonte. Among her most important exhibitions are Histórias/ Histórias: Arte Contemporânea do Brasil, USF Contemporary Art Museum, Florida (2016); Mulheres Artistas de Ninguém, from the collection of the Rubell family, Rubell Collection, Miami (2015/2016); The Hand New afro-brasileira, Museu Afro Brasil, São Paulo (2013); and Art & Têxteis – tecido de material e Conceito na arte moderna, Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Wolfsburg (2013). The artist participated in Todos os futuros do mundo, in the 56th Venice Art Biennale in 2015. In 2018, Sonia did two important solo exhibitions: Ainda assim me levanto at MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo / Casa de Vidro, São Paulo, Brasil and A vida renasce, sempre at MAC Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
