In Imperfect Pearl: The History and the Stories in the Work of Adriana Varejão, anthropologist and historian Lilia Moritz Schwarcz treads the research and construction paths of the work of Adriana Varejão, dialectically bridging the retelling of the story by the artist and the many narrative possibilities entwined in this creative process. About the authors
Adriana Varejão was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1964, were she lives and works. In 2011 she recevied the Order of Cultural Merit from Cultural Ministry of Brazil and in 2008, the Medal of Chevalier des Arts et Lettres awarded by the french government. Lilia Moritz Schwartz was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1957. She is a doctor in social anthropology at the University of São Paulo, full professor at the Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas also at the University of São Paulo, and visiting professor at Princeton University. Schwartz’s main fields of study are anthropology and history of 19th-century Brazil, focusing on the Brazilian Empire, social identity, slavery and race relations between White and Afro-Brazilian peoples.
