BLACK

The public speech of an Afro-Brazilian woman is the point of entry for introducing the audience to reflections on the possibilities of interaction between differences and on the essential role of dialogue in urgent matters. Created by Companhia Brasileira de Teatro, BLACK deals with racism, prejudice, violence, empathy and the position of “lesbian black women” as subjects in a predominantly white, male and straight world. The text of BLACK was written by Grace Passô, Marcio Abreu and Nadja Naira, built over a research process with actors Cassia Damasceno, Rodrigo Bolzan, Felipe Soares and Renata Sorrah.

... then you go after the fire. Obstinately, you go after the fire, and that obstinacy that appears suddenly is also a kind of fire, an internal one, which burns inside and makes you act, know, run, lift, support, fight, sweat, lick, move, rub, pant, involve, dance, dance, dance, come, whisper loving words in someone’s ear, scream, and someone, from afar, listen to that scream and know someone’s there, screaming after the fire, who can only scream because there’s also this kind of fire...

About the company
The companhia brasileira de teatro is an artist’s collective from various parts of the country, founded by playwright and director Marcio Abreu in 2000 in Curitiba, where it’s based, in an old building in the historical center. Its research is mainly focused on new forms of writing and contemporary creation. Among their main accomplishments, plays with original text, written in collaborative processes, simultaneous with the creation of the performances, such as BLACK, 2017, PROJETO bRASIL (bRAZIL PROJECT), 2015, Vida (Life), 2015, O que eu gostaria de dizer (What I’d like to say), 2008, Volta ao dia... (Back to the Day...), 2002. There are also a series of creations based on the work of authors previously unpublished in the country, such as Krum, 2015, by Hanoch Levin; Esta criança (This Child), 2012, by Joel Pommerat; Isso te interessa? (Does it Interest You?), 2011, based on “Bon, Saint-Cloud” by Noelle Renaude; Oxigênio (Oxygen), 2010, by Ivan Viripaev. The company also does frequent exchanges with other artists in Brazil and abroad. They premiered in France in 2014 with Nus, ferozes e antropófagos (Naked, Wild and Flesh-eating), in partnership with French collective Compagnie Jakart. The collective keeps an active repertoire, in frequent circulation. And it won some main arts awards in the country.
