About the artist
Musician, singer and songwriter, Jorge Ben freely takes in elements of pop music, rock, soul, funk, bossa nova and samba. He wrote some of the most memorable songs in Brazilian music, such as “Chove chuva”, “Mas que nada”, and “Fio Maravilha”. His creative freedom in songwriting, his peculiar understanding of samba and especially the theme of the African Brazilian culture set his work apart in the history of Brazilian music.
About the author
Paulo da Costa e Silva is a musician, essayist and a professor of aesthetics in the Department of History of Art at UFRJ (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro). He coordinated the radio program on Brazilian music and interviews at the Moreira Salles Institute (IMS-RJ), the Rádio Batuta, and is currently a music columnist in the online version of the magazine Piauí.
