Mote #1

Mote is a biannual essay magazine written and produced by thinkers and intellectuals that investigate contemporary themes. Each edition is guided by a motto (mote) — a word that serves as a starting point and a provocation a polysemic term that instigates and articulates the connection between essays and visual works in each issue of the magazine.
Published physically, to be leafed through without a rush, Mote is an invitation for an environment of conceptual and aesthetic experimentation, in which multiple reflections consider multiple points of view and each follows a singular path. Each issue brings together essays that move trough different fields of knowledge, particularly political and social themes of the contemporary world.
“Beginning” is the motto chosen for this first issue, with essays that explore the different meanings evoked by the word, such as birth, emergence, rise, or invention of thoughts, processes, or things. In keeping with the magazine’s aim to offer a reading that goes beyond the expected and the probable, some texts also address the challenging or opposing of the very idea of a beginning endings, deaths, and decline.
The editorial board of the magazine is composed by the anthropologists Eugênia Motta and Gustavo Onto. The essays of the first published issue are authored by the physicist Pedro Lisboa, the anthropologists Adriana Vianna, João Biehl, Karen Shiratori and Emanuele Fabiano, the philosopher Pedro Pimenta, the sociologist Luiz Augusto Campos, the historian Ynaê Lopes dos Santos and the economists Pedro Souza and Samuel Maia. The visual essays are by the artists Juliana Lapa and Raylton Parga.
