Marina Lima: Fullgás

Released in 1984, Fullgás materializes the spirit of its time — a moment of democratic transition and expansion of personal freedom in Brazilian society after twenty years under a military dictatorship. The country was boiling, combusting, bubbling up, some of the meaning carried by the term in the album’s and its opening track’s title: full gas, recalling a full gas tank, ready for a long journey.

In Marina Lima: Fullgás, writer and researcher Renato Gonçalves showcases a close listening of the LP that, combining rock, pop and MPB, sold over 250 thousand copies. From reading the “Fullgás Manifesto”, written by Marina and her brother, poet Antonio Cicero, to analyzing the album track by track, the author explores gender representations, political meaning, and the pop language featured in the songs.

About the author
Renato Gonçalves holds a doctorate in Communication Sciences (ECA-USP) and a master's degree in Philosophy (IEB-USP). He’s currently a professor at ESPM-SP and a post-doctoral candidate at IEB-USP, and his research spans communications, semiotics, psychoanalysis, philosophy, and critical theory. He’s the author of Nós duas: As representações LGBT na canção brasileira (2016), which won the ProAC award.

About the artist
Marina Lima is one of the singers, composers, and musicians to best imprint her authorship in Brazilian music. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1955, having lived part of her childhood and tweenage years in the United States with her parents and older brother, her musical partner and poet Antonio Cicero, Marina is influenced by MPB, bossa nova, and Black American music, leading her to compose a particular pop language since her debut in 1979. In over forty years on the road, she collects various hits and 21 albums.

About the collection
The O Livro do Disco collection was released in 2014 by Cobogó in order to present readers with distinct musical reflections about albums that were, and still are, essential to our cultural and, of course, emotional education. With each title, the reader is invited to dive deep in the history of albums that broke barriers, opened paths and defied convention. O Livro do Disco is for music fans, but also for those who desire a deeper, yet accessible, contact with the context and central figures of works that made music history. In times of fragmented listening and music access through streaming platforms, finding (again) these albums in their totality is a way of hearing what they have to say about our times.
