Gang 90 & Absurdettes: Essa tal de Gang 90 & Absurdettes

Gang 90 & Absurdettes was one of the first 1980s Brazilian rock bands movement. With new wave sound and visuals, somewhere between the B-52’s and Kid Creole & The Coconuts, the band led by poet Júlio Barroso was composed of young people singing their lives, loves and parties. Based on interviews and research, the author presents, in the form of a novelized biography, the electrifying story of the Gang and its members, especially Júlio and the Absurdette Alice Pink Pank, a Dutch woman in her early twenties who landed on a Brazil in transformation and lived, alongside Júlio, a creative and chaotic rollercoaster during the creation of the group’s first album, Essa tal de Gang 90 & Absurdettes. Amidst concerts at the club Pauliceia Desvairada and national tours, the hit singles “Nosso Louco Amor” and “Perdidos na Selva”, all in all fueled by whiskey and drugs, this book shows how a nearly accidental vertiginous success was the result of combined encounters and affections, romances and fights, creation and anarchy.

About the band
Created by poet Júlio Barroso in the early 1980s, Gang 90 & Absurdettes was a new wave band with amazing stage presence who invaded Brazilian radio with hits like “Perdidos na Selva” and “Nosso Louco Amor” before their first LP was even out. With Júlio on vocals, Herman Torres on guitar, and the chorus of Absurdettes Alice Pink Pank, May East and Denise Barroso, the band’s extended family included poets, musicians and whoever else would show up for rehearsal and collective creative sessions. After the first album, Júlio Barroso composed the songs for a second release, but his life was tragically interrupted when he fell out of his window in São Paulo, in 1984.
