Crucial Two One

In Crucial Dois Um, Paulo Scott’s playwriting debut, the writer weaves an universe divided by insurmountable walls, commanded by the economical dispute over drinking water. The plot gains dystopian airs when we’re presented to the Twenty-One Return program, whose goal is to provide 21 hours of survival so that their select clientele might deal with bureaucratic, professional and personal matters. It's in this scenery of frayed moral and ethical limits that we see the meeting of two people attempting to preserve their dignity in a society whose only premise seems to be maintaining power.

The edition, featuring a foreword by playwright and director Inez Viana and an afterword by writer Veronica Stigger, also features a cover by designer André Victor, based on the work of artist Carla Santana.

“I still haven’t found the power of playwriting, but, when facing a text such as Crucial Dois Um, which subverts order, shakes up by reading inertia, and guides me in a feverish read full of epiphanies, I do think it has the power of saving me!” – Inez Viana

“The play, that won its first award in 2006, is still extremely current in its allegorical view of Brazilian society. In the conflict of employee versus employee, both of them lose. Both will always lose if they continue to serve those who own the decisive goods for life, or those who rule them, no matter how high they might currently be in the social scale.” – Veronica Stigger
