Céu: Céu

Céu’s debut album presents an intimate and cosmopolitan cartography that weaves together the pillars of classic MPB and the pulsating beats of the Black diaspora from dub to Afrobeat, jazz to hip-hop. Defying outdated, Eurocentric, expectations regarding the “sound of Brazil”, the record floated effortlessly across national borders, reaching the impressive milestone of 100000 copies sold in the United States and topping the Billboard charts. In Europe, it sold 25000 copies across the French and Dutch markets.

In this The Book of the Album, journalist Fabiane Pereira masterfully dissects the early moments of Céu’s career path. From her formative time in New York, to her magnetic comeback in São Paulo, the book reveals the behind-the-scenes details of the recordings, the reception by international critics, and the acclaim achieved through the soundtracks that captivated the nation.

The result of a series of exclusive interviews with the singer, Fabiane Pereira brings us a essential historical record and a brand new look regarding an album whose aesthetic never surrendered to passing trends, but rather to the search for permanence and truth. Céu sounds today as urgent, fresh and mature as it did on the day of its release.

About the artist
Maria do Céu Whitaker Poças, Céu (São Paulo, 1980), started her artistic trajectory with a self-titled album that redefined the aesthetic of contemporary urban music in Brazil. Possessing a distinctive artistic voice and unique vocal subtlety, her avant-garde fusion of samba, dub, R&B, and electro has won over audiences at the world’s major festivals.

With a 21 year trajectory and 9 albums widely praised by critics, Céu has built herself as one of the main artists of her generation. Her work has been acclaimed with the prestigious APCA award for Best Female Singer and two Latin Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Pop Album (for Tropix, in 2016, and Apká, in 2020). Moving freely between emerging names on the scene and global music legends, Céu exists in a unique place in culture that of an artist in a perpetual state of reinvention.
